LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) - UNLV junior Lucia Batta won both of her singles matches and moved into the quarterfinals after Friday's opening day of the 11th annual Freeman Memorial Women's Tennis Championships at the Fertitta Tennis Complex on campus.

Batta, last year's Mountain West Player of the Year, opened the day by easing by Julia Metzger of Oregon 6-1, 6-1 and then knocked off 47th-ranked Kyle McPhillips of UCLA, 6-4, 3-6, 6-2 to advance in the top flight of singles. On Saturday she will face the nation's No. 2-ranked player beginning at approximately 11 a.m.as Stanford's top-seeded Krista Hardebeck also advanced.

The host's other three players in the top draw all lost in the opening round and moved into the consolation bracket. That's where Lady Rebel Nives Pavlovic nearly pulled off the biggest upset of her career. The senior won the first set and was leading the second 5-2 over 22nd-ranked Danielle Collins of Florida before Collins rallied to win in a super-tiebreaker, 3-6, 7-5, 1-0 (10-4).

Another UNLV junior, Aleksandra Josifoska, who is ranked 20th in the nation, sat out singles play at the tournament.

In the top flight of doubles, all three of UNLV's duos fell in the first round.

Players from some of the top college programs in the United States have gathered in Las Vegas this weekend for an individual tournament. The impressive field boasts seven of the top 30 individuals and two of the sport's top-eight ranked doubles teams scheduled to compete. Saturday's action begins with the quarterfinals of doubles at 10 a.m., followed by two more rounds of singles. The finals are scheduled for Sunday. Admission to all matches is free.
