LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) - Thanks a pair of key wins in the final two events, the UNLV men's and women's swimming and diving teams completed a sweep over UC Santa Barbara in dual meet action on Saturday afternoon at Buchanan Natatorium. The 23rd-ranked UNLV men's team (5-1) posted a 155-143 victory over the Gauchos (3-2), while the Rebel women won their third straight meet to improve to 4-4 on the year thanks to a 155-145 victory over UCSB (5-2).
Holding a five-point lead entering the final event, the Rebel women needed a win to claim a victory and did just that, as Rachel Dixon, Julia Fehervari, Jessica Heim and Katelyne Herrington posted a time of 3:28.82 in the 400 free relay, more then two seconds ahead of UCSB's top relay. That was the second relay win of the day, as Robb, Nakayla Chan, Herrington and Dixon also won the 200 medley relay in a time of 1:42.43.
Robb was a double individual event winner for the Rebels, claiming both back events, the 100 in a time of 54.47 and touching the wall in 1:59.30 in the 200. Also posting two wins was diver Mariah Skeen, on the 1-meter and 3-meter (243.98) boards. Single event winners for UNLV included: Heim in the 1000 free (10:18.81), Fehervari in the 200 free (1:55.24), Hilary Ego in the 50 free (23.70), Herrington in the 100 fly (49.67).
The UNLV men were also paced by a pair of double-event winners, Balint Bakta and Giacomo Gremizzi, with the latter's win in the second to last event, the 200 IM (1:51.12), clinching the win for the Rebels. Gremizzi's other win was in the 200 breast (2:04.63), while Bakta placed first in the 200 fly (1:47.06) and 200 back (1:49.99). Other winners for the Rebel men were: Matt Roe in the 1000 free (9:34.28), Henrique Machado in the 100 back (50.33), David Szele in the 100 breast (55.69), Tom Paco-Pedroni in the 50 free (20.94), and Cody Roberts in the 100 fly (49.67). The Rebels also won the 200 medley relay, with Machado, Szele, Roberts and Guilherme Passos posting a winning time of 1:30.31.
The Rebels when the men host Air Force in a pair of dual meets on Friday, Jan. 25 at 5 pm, and again the next day on Saturday, Jan. 26 at 11 am, with both meets in Buchanan.
