LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) - UNLV senior Lucia Batta won twice Saturday to advance to Sunday's singles final at the 2013 USTA/ITA Mountain Region Championships being held at the Fertitta Tennis Complex on campus.
Batta, who won this even three years ago, downed Mayci Jones of BYU 6-3, 6-2 before ousting third-seeded and 66th-ranked Sarah Pham of Utah, 6-0, 6-3.
UNLV's other player still alive Saturday, top-seeded and 32nd-ranked Aleksandra Josifoska, opened the morning by easing past eighth-seeded Veronica Popovici of Wyoming, 6-2, 6-2, before being upset by UNR's fifth-seeded Michelle Okhremchuk, 6-2, 6-4.
In doubles play, Josifoska and Batta moved into Sunday's semifinals with an 8-6 victory over Utah State's fifth-seeded McKenzie Davis and Kallie Sperry.
Sunday's action starts with the doubles semifinals at 9 a.m., followed by the doubles final. The singles championship will follow that. Admission to all matches is free of charge.
Members from 19 western teams faced off as individuals this week on 12 courts each day in both singles and doubles. This is one of 24 USTA/ITA Regional Championships for NCAA Division I men and women taking place over these middle two weekends of October at campuses throughout the country. The singles and doubles champions will advance to the 2013 USTA/ITA National Intercollegiate Indoor Championships, taking place November 7-10, at the indoor facilities at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center, located in Flushing, N.Y.
