LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) - The UNLV Fall Invitational continued to produce fast times all over the pool, with several more national top times recorded on the second night of finals on Friday at Buchanan Natatorium. The top-ranked California women's swimming team continues to lead the women's side, while No. 5 Stanford held onto their lead in the men's standings.
Cal won all seven events on Friday and have 825 points after two days, while No. 17 UCLA is in second with 394. Arizona State is third with 334.5, UNLV is fourth with 245.5, and rounding out the meet is UC Santa Barbara in fifth (241), Oregon State in sixth (143), Northern Arizona in seventh (123), BYU in eighth (89), and Colorado State in ninth (85).
On the men's side, Stanford and the No. 25 UNLV men combined to win seven events total, four for the Cardinals and three for the Rebels. Stanford's two-day score is 907, while UNLV is next with 529, UCSB is third (261), Arizona State fourth (254), Wyoming fifth (241) and BYU sixth (152).
The night's first event was the 200 medley relay, and the Cal team won with a time of 1:38.56, ranking as the second fast time in the nation coming into Friday. UNLV placed fifth, with Jessica Wong, Hannah Taylor, Katelyne Herrington and Rachel Dixon posting a time of 1:42.37. In the men's event, the Rebels' team of Henrique Machado, David Szele, Dillon Virva and Guilherme Passos set yet another top time in the nation after touching the wall in 1:26.50.
400 IM titles were won by Elizabeth Pelton (4:10.83) of Cal on the women's side, while Rebel Kristina Hendrick placed 15th in 4:26.07. UNLV's Giacomo Gremizzi held a late lead in the men's 400 IM, but was passed on the final 50 free to end up third in 3:47.81, behind Drew Cosgarea (3:44.32) of Stanford and Dave Nolan, also of Stanford. All three swimmers posted times ranking them in the top three in the nation. Three Rebels scored in the consolation heat, with Jake Priest taking 10th (3:55.96), Hannon Daigler 11th (3:57.48) and Matt Roe 15th (4:04.05).
Sophia Batchelor led a 1-2 Cal finish in the women's 100 fly, winning in 52.49. UNLV's Katelyne Herrington was third, with a 52.78 after winning the morning prelims with a time of 52.71. Stanford's Connor Black was the winner on the men's side in 47.32. UNLV scored four in that event, led by Virva's third place swim of 47.98. Balint Batka was seventh in 48.99, Bryan Harvey eighth in 49.08 and Dylan Tarazona 12th in 49.63.
Piehl won her second event of the night for Cal with a 1:46.44 in the 200 free. UNLV's Jessica Heim, who had the morning's top time (1:48.85), placed eighth in 1:51.01. Wyoming won its first event of the meet when Adams Kalms placed first in the 200 free with a mark of 1:35.23, the top time in the nation entering Friday. Samuel Lameynardie was fourth for the Rebels, turning in a time of 1:38.03.
In the 100 breast, Marina Garcia Urzainqui claimed first after touching the wall in 1:01.27. The Rebel men won their second event of the night when David Szele turned in the second fastest time in the nation with a 53.83. Brandon Meier was fifth for UNLV in 55.94, JR Deem took seventh in 58.20, and Danny Bullington finished in 15th in 58.25.
The final individual event was the 100 back, with Cal's Cindy Tran posting a time of 52.22 to place first. That would also rank her first in the nation. Rachel Dixon placed eighth for UNLV in 56.10. UNLV won its fourth men's event when Machado posted a 47.79 in the 100 back, a time that ranks fifth in the nation. Guilherme Passos finished in sixth place in 49.74, while Collin Baldacci took 10th (50.19) and Bryan Harvey 14th (51.78).
The night closed out with the 800 free relay. Cal took first with a time of 7:09.85, while UNLV's team of Elena Gavrilova, Heim, Julia Fehervari and Jessica Marsh placed seventh in 7:29.07. Stanford men claimed the 800 free relay, finishing in a time of 6:30.3. UNLV placed fifth in the event, with Tom Paco-Pedroni, Lameynardie, Priest and Gremizzi turning in a time of 6:42.04.
The meet concludes on Saturday, with prelims at 9 am and the finals beginning at 4 pm.
UNLV DIVING NEWS - Four Rebel divers were also in action on Friday, on the first day of the 6th Annual Wildcat Invitational in Tucson, Ariz., hosted by the University of Arizona. On the men's 1-meter, Lucas James placed 11th in 259.75, while Spenser Sullivan finished 13th with a score of 253.35 in the consolation round. Michele Serra placed 42nd on the women's 3-meter with a score of 163.25, and Taylor Shillingburg was 43rd (147.70).
