FLUSHING, N.Y. - UNLV standout Lucia Batta continued her strong fall performance by winning a first round match Thursday at the prestigious USTA/ITA National Indoor Collegiate Championships being played at the Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in Flushing, N.Y.

The senior, ranked 41st in the nation, failed to close out her opponent in the first set but then rallied to down 18th-ranked Pleun Burgmans of Auburn, 6-7 (4), 6-4, 6-2.

Batta, who improved her fall singles record to 11-1, will now face eighth-seeded and 60th-ranked Silvia Garcia of Georgia in Friday's second round. Garcia, who earned her spot in the elite field by winning the USTA/ITA Southeast Regional Championship, downed Baylor's Kiah Generette 6-4, 6-0 in her first rounder. The tournament runs through Sunday.

As the only tournament on the ITA calendar to showcase elite players from every level of college tennis, the USTA/ITA National Indoor Intercollegiate Championships serves as the culmination of the fall season. Hosted by Columbia University, the event features a 32-player singles draw and a 20-team doubles draw for men and women. Gaining automatic entry into the tournament are champions from the USTA/ITA Division I Regional Championships held across the country in October, winners of the USTA/ITA National Small College Super Bowl, and the consolation champions, doubles finalists, men's singles quarterfinalists and women's singles semifinalists from the ITA Men's and Riviera/ITA Women's All-American Championships.
