KAHUKU, Hawaii (UNLVRebels.com) - The UNLV men's golf team shot a final-round 5-over-par 293 on Friday and finished in sixth place at the 16-team, 88-individual John A. Burns Intercollegiate, which was played at Turtle Bay Resort's Arnold Palmer Course (par 72, 7218 yards).
California won the team title for the third straight year with a 54-hole total of 14under 850. The Golden Bears shot a final-round 4-under and won the event by 27 shots. New Mexico finished second at 13-over, BYU was third at 19-over, while Arizona and Texas A&M rounded out the top five, both tying for fourth place.
UNLV's three-round total was 25-over 293.
Cal's Joel Stalter led wire-to-wire, winning the individual championship by eight shots at 12-under 204. He shot a final-round 5-under 67. Teammates Max Homa and Michael Weaver finished second and third, respectively, at 4- and 2-under.
UNLV junior Blake Biddle was the Rebels' top finisher at 6-over 222 after a final-round 2-over 74, tying for 14th. Freshman AJ McInerney tied for 17th at 7-over 223 after a final-round 3-over 75, while senior Kevin Pennerwas the third UNLV player with a top-20 finish as he tied for 20th at 8-over 224 after a final-round 1-over 73.
Sophomore Carl Jonson tied for 37th at 12-over 228 after a final-round 1-under 71 and freshman Zane Thomastied for 46th at 13-over 229 after a final-round 8-over 80.
UNLV's next tournament will be its own as it will host the Southern Highlands Collegiate Masters at Southern Highlands Golf Club in Las Vegas, March 8-10.
