March 9, 2013

Final Stats

PALO ALTO, Calif. (UNLVRebels.com) - UNLV baseball (12-3) is on an eight game winning streak after beating No. 9 Stanford 12-2 on Saturday at Sunken Diamond in Palo Alto, Calif. It is the longest winning streak by the Rebels since 2009.

UNLV got off to an early start, scoring runs in the first, second and third innings to take a 4-0 lead. Stanford answered back with a run in the third and cut the deficit to two with another run in the fourth.

That would be the extent of the Cardinal scoring for the day, but UNLV would add eight more. They scored three runs in the fifth, two in the seventh and three more in the eighth to lock up the win.

Sophomore Erik VanMeetren and senior Mark Shannon led the Rebels with three hits on the day. VanMeetren finished 3-for-5 with 2 RBI. He also scored three runs in the game. Shannon also went 3-for-5 while scoring two runs. Joey Swanner, Brandon Bayardi and Matt McCallister all finished with multiple hits on Saturday.

Junior Buddy Borden notched his second win of the season, pitching 6.1 innings. He allowed two runs on seven hits while striking out six. Borden extended his 0.00 ERA into the third inning, but Wayne Taylor scored on a Danny Diekroeger single to break up Borden's streak.

Freshman Kenny Oakley came in for relief in the seventh inning and pitched 2.2 innings. He allowed only two hits and struck out five batters.

Saturday's win over the Cardinal also gives UNLV the series victory. It is the first time since 2009 that Stanford has lost a home series. That year, Texas Tech took two of three against the Cardinal.

The Rebels will look for the sweep tomorrow against Stanford at 1:00 p.m. UNLV's John Richy is scheduled to get the nod against Stanford's Bobby Zarubin. Fans can follow along via GameTracker or can listen and watch live off of links at UNLVRebels.com.
