LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) - UNLV baseball will have at least five players participating in summer all-star games in the coming weeks. The rising sophomores playing in their respective leagues all-star game are Joey Armstrong, Cody Howard, Justin Jones, Brayden Torres and Collin Yelich.
Summer league teammates on the Santa Paulo Halos, Yelich and Torres will play for the North All-Stars in the California Collegiate League All-Star game. Yelich is hitting .307 for the Halos and has played in 24 of the team's 28 games. Torres has a 2-1 record to go with a 2.48 ERA and is second in the CCL with 36 strikeouts. A total of 60 players from eight teams in the CCL were chosen to make two all-star teams. The North All-Stars will play the South All-Stars on July 17th and the game will be televised by Fox College Sports Pacific at 7 p.m.
Howard and Jones are teammates on the Shelter Island Bucks and will represent UNLV in the Hamptons Collegiate Baseball League All-Star as members of the North All-Stars. Howard is hitting .280 on the year, while Jones is hitting .250. Howard has seen the most playing time for the Bucks, as he has appeared in 22 games and has had 82 at-bats. Jones closely follows, as he has appeared in 21 games and has had 80 at-bats. A total of 56 players from seven teams in the HCBL will make up two all-star teams. The North All-Stars will play the South All-Stars on Saturday, July 13th.
Armstrong, who is playing for the East Texas Pump Jacks, was a starter in the Texas Collegiate League All-Star game, which was played on July 9. Armstrong, who is hitting .291 on the season for the Pump Jacks, went 1-for-5 with an RBI and scored a run to help the East squad defeat the West 11-8. He got the starting nod a third base and moved to catch in the sixth inning. A total of 44 players from six teams in the TCL made up two all-star teams.
The Cape Cod Baseball League will release its All-Star rosters on July 20th for the game on July 27, which will be televised by Fox College Sports Atlantic. Both T.J. White and Erick Fedde are playing for the Yarmouth-Dennis Red Sox this season.
