Camp Notes: Rebs Not Alone In Going Away

Aug 14, 2013

ELY (UNLVRebels.com) - Two-a-days rolled on for the Rebels here at Broadbent Park Wednesday.

--A shorter-than-usual morning session sent the team off to a lunch of Mexican food while a hard-hitting, sun-baked afternoon affair was rewarded with a barbecue dinner that included ribs, chicken and corn on the cob at the Ely Convention Center just a couple of blocks away from the fields.

--Every Rebel in camp was in full pads for the first time as freshman receiver Kendal Keys finished his mandatory period of wearing shorts.

--Perhaps the most exciting play of the day came during team drills in the afternoon as senior quarterback Caleb Herring hit Devante Davis for what looked to be a long touchdown before junior defensive back Tajh Hasson did not give up on the play and eventually caught up to Davis and stripped the ball inside the five-yard line. Hasson picked up the fumble and sprinted the other way as the opposite sideline suddenly came alive.

--The squad will hold a single afternoon practice on Thursday in preparation of Saturday's first camp scrimmage.

CAMP THEY-BE-GONE: As UNLV continues in its eighth year training in Ely, it is certainly not alone in heading out of town for some portion of preseason camp. According to a list compiled by the University of Cincinnati's sports information department, the Rebels are just one of 15 FBS schools going away for camp in 2013.

While FIU goes all of one mile to a park in Miami, UNLV is believed to travel the most miles from its home base with Ely located 249 miles away from campus. Two teams -- Cincinnati and Northwestern -- actually go to a different state as the Bearcats head across the border to Indiana while the Wildcats move up to Wisconsin.
