LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) - UNLV will have three players vying for singles titles on Sunday after another strong performance by the host contingent during the second round of the annual UNLV Women's Tennis Fall Invitational at the Fertitta Tennis Complex on campus.
The event, which features seven flights of singles and four flights of doubles, includes individuals from eight schools.
In singles, 41st-ranked senior standout Lucia Batta advanced by defeating Tiffany William of Middle Tennessee State, 6-0, 6-4, in the top flight. She will face Ebba Unden of Long Beach State in Sunday's championship.
In Flight Three, freshman Santa Shumilina held off Ariadna Cairo Baza of Southern Illinois, 6-1, 3-6, 7-6. In Flight Five, Anett Ferenczi-Bako moved into her final by downing Ana Sofia Cordero of North Texas, 7-6, 6-3.
In doubles, UNLV got wins on three courts: Flight Two saw Shumilina and newcomer Kamelia Dimitrova defeat Laura Matauskova and Mary Angela Martin of South Alabama, 8-4; Iren Kotseva and Paola Artiga downed Annemieke Witte and Brittany Collens of NMSU, 8-1, in Flight Three; and Alexis Garrett and Ferenczi-Bako won the fourth flight with an 8-2 victory over a team formed from SIU and NAU.
Play begins with doubles action on Sunday at 10 a.m. and admission is free of charge.
