Players from some of the top college programs in the United States completed two rounds of singles and one round of doubles Friday to open the 12th annual Freeman Memorial Women's Tennis Championships being played at the Fertitta Tennis Complex.
With UNLV's top two players, senior stars Lucia Batta and Aleksandra Josifoska, not taking part in the main draw of singles, the host Rebels earned just one win on the day. In fact, after trailing 9-2 in the third-set super-tiebreaker, local product Alexis Garrett turned in a furious rally to down UCLA's Morgan Thomas 6-3, 0-6, 1-0 (11-9).
Overall, the impressive field boasts 12 of the nation's top-50 ranked individuals in singles and two of the sport's top-three ranked doubles teams.
Action will resume with doubles Saturday at 10 a.m. followed by two rounds of singles. The finals are scheduled for Sunday. Admission to all matches is free.
