FALL BASEBALL: Gray Squad Evens Series With Win

Oct. 25, 2014

LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) - The Gray team bounced back to even the Scarlet and Gray World Series at one game a piece with a 17-6 win over the Scarlet squad on Saturday at Earl E. Wilson Stadium

The Gray team was up 4-3 before erupting for 13 runs in the last three innings to make it a blow out. Leading the way for the team offensively was freshman shortstop Nicholas Rodriguez and A.J. Hernandez, who both finished with three hits, scored three runs and drove in three RBI. Erik VanMeetren and Edgar Montes also added two hits and four RBI. Cody Roper got the win after pitching in relief of starter Zak Qualls.

"Everybody worked well together today," VanMeetren said. "We thrived off each other and everybody played hard. We had some young guys really step it up in clutch situations and once we got a lead we didn't look back. Hopefully we can stay aggressive next week and come back out and get the next one."

Joey Armstrong, who finished with four hits, and Justin Jones, who had three hits, led the Scarlet team. Connor Clark reached base all four times again, extending his consecutive on base streak to eight in the first two games of the series.

D.J. Myers, who started for the Scarlet team, suffered the loss but pitched effectively allowing only two runs, one of which was earned, on three hits in four innings of work.

"It was a good competitive game until last three innings," associate head coach and pitching coach Stan Stolte said. "D.J. Myers did his job and had his team in great position to win until the bullpen came in and removed any doubt of the outcome. We were happy to see the Gray team not let up and kept laying it on the Scarlet team."

Game three of the Scarlet and Gray World Series is scheduled for Wednesday with the first pitched slated for 9:00 a.m. PT. Admission to the contest is free and fans are invited to attend.

Game 1 Recap - Oct. 24, 2014
Austin Anderson (three hits, RBI), Joey Swanner (two hits, two RBI) and Connor Clark (two hits, two RBI) paced the Scarlet offense as they captured game one of the Scarlet and Gray World Series 7-4 on Friday at Earl E. Wilson Stadium.

Christian Myers threw two shutout innings in relief of starter Ben Wright to get the win. Corey Wilson also pitched for the Scarlet team, giving up only one earned run in the final two innings.

Joey Lauria and Matt Thomas gave up seven runs on six hits and walked five batters for the Gray team. Offensively, the Gray team recorded six hits and scored three runs late in the game to turn a 7-1 deficit into 7-4 final.

"We were very disappointed in our older pitchers on both teams today," associate head coach and pitching coach Stan Stoltesaid. "They attacked no one and pitched scared. But on the other hand, we were happy with freshmen Myers & Bohall stepping up and pitching with some fire. The Scarlet team had some good at bats and took advantage of plays not being made defensively by the gray team."
