Nov. 13, 2014 Box Score: UNLV 3, UNR 0
LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) - The UNLV volleyball team notched its 12th straight victory over its in-state rival Nevada, Reno Thursday night. The Rebels, who won the match by a 3-0 decision (25-11, 25-18, 25-20), have now swept the Wolf Pack in five consecutive contests and eight of the dozen triumphs.
With the win, the Scarlet & Gray upped its overall record to 23-6 and maintains its hold on second place in the Mountain West with an 11-3 mark. The Wolf Pack, on the other hand, dropped to 7-17 for the year and 4-10 in the MW.
By virtue of the season sweep, the Rebel volleyball program earned three points for UNLV's athletics department in the standings for the 2014-15 Governor's Series presented by NV Energy and sponsored by Barrick Gold. With the addition of the points, UNLV pulled even with UNR at 4.5 with three sports - women's soccer, cross country and volleyball - in the books.
UNLV outhit UNR by 224 points (.205 to -.019) with only an advantage of one kill (28-27) and .143 or better set efficiencies. The Rebels' hitting edge was helped by a plus-19 margin (10-29) in errors despite a major discrepancy in attack attempts (88-104). The home side committed no more than five errors in any frame and hit between .143 (second set) and .333 (first) in the match. The visitors were hampered by a minimum of nine miscues in each stanza, which produced -.138, .000 and .053 set averages.
The Wolf Pack's -.019 hitting was the worst registered by an opponent this season and the lowest dating back to Sept. 7, 2012, when Prairie View A&M had a paltry effort of -.184.
The Rebel defense was the difference in the match with totals of 15.0 total team blocks (two solo, 26 assisted) and 47 digs. Six different players notched at least two assisted blocks, while Bree Hammel owned a match-best seven total blocks (one solo). Katlin Winters and Alyssa Wing followed closely behind with six (all assisted) and five (one solo) total blocks of their own.
Daryn Glenn, who had four assisted blocks, was one of two to crack double digits in digs. Glenn was second on the team in the category with 11 and three behind the team-high of 14 tallied by Allison Davies. Besides the defensive effort, Glenn also had a match-best eight kills. The pair also aced two serves apiece.
Two others that helped out at the net were able to score for UNLV, as well. Wing had seven kills, while Winters had six.
Alexis Patterson dished out a match-high 20 assists to go along with five digs, four kills, three assisted blocks and one ace.
"Our passing definitely struggled tonight, so we couldn't run our middles like we usually do," said head coach Cindy Fredrick. "Alyssa and Daryn did a good job putting the ball away and our blocking was very strong. It was good to beat the Wolf Pack in three, though!"
UNR was paced by 14 assists and nine digs from Lyndsey Anderson. Donna Greely led the squad with seven kills, while teammate Kara Kasser had a match-high 15 digs.
UNLV remains at home for a Saturday night affair against the San Jose State Spartans, which will be streamed live on the Mountain West Network. First serve is slated for 6:00 pm. The evening has been deemed the Rebels' "Pink Game" in support of Breast Cancer Awareness. All fans wearing pink can purchase half-priced tickets. The first 250 fans through the doors will also receive a UNLV volleyball branded headband.
