Nov. 15, 2014 LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) - After opening the season with a thrilling come-from-behind 60-59 victory over Morehead State on Friday night at the Thomas & Mack Center, the Runnin' Rebels will continue play at home in the Coaches vs. Cancer Classic by hosting Sam Houston State on Sunday, Nov. 16 at 5 p.m. The game against the Bearkats will be UNLV's last at home before heading to Brooklyn, N.Y., for the championship rounds of the Classic.
The Runnin' Rebels, who had to replace all five starters from a year ago, were led on Friday night by freshman guard Rashad Vaughn's 26 points. While records are incomplete, it surely ranks among the top collegiate debuts by a Runnin' Rebel in history. Sophomore forward Christian Wood recorded his first career double-double with a career-high 12 points and a career-high 12 rebounds, also blocking four shots. Freshman forward Goodluck Okonoboh blocked seven shots (also most likely a debut program record), while senior guard Cody Doolin dished out seven assists with just one turnover and collected six rebounds. The Runnin' Rebels trailed by as many as 11 in the second half and Vaughn, who also had seven rebounds, sunk a tie-breaking 3-pointer from the corner with 1:06 remaining, which turned out to be the game winner.
Sunday's game will have no television coverage, however a live Mountain West Network video stream will be available for free at UNLVRebels.com with Tony Cordasco and Keith Starr calling the action. Jon Sandler and Robert Smith will handle the radio call, which may be heard live on ESPN Radio 1100 AM/100.9 FM. All internet links along with live stats will be available at UNLVRebels.com.
