Nov. 19, 2014 LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) - After winning two close games at home in the 2014 Northwestern Mutual Coaches vs. Cancer Classic preliminary rounds (Morehead State, 60-59, on Friday; Sam Houston State, 59-57, on Sunday), the UNLV men's basketball team will travel to Brooklyn, N.Y., for the championship rounds of the event.
The Runnin' Rebels will face Stanford on Friday, Nov. 21, at 7 p.m. EST/4 p.m. PST at Barclays Center, with a matchup against either No. 4/3 Duke or Temple on Saturday, Nov. 22, at either 7 p.m. EST/4 p.m. PST or 9:30 p.m. EST/6:30 p.m. PST.
The Runnin' Rebels, who had to replace all five starters from a year ago, have played five freshmen, two sophomores and two seniors so far this season. Freshman guard Rashad Vaughn scored 26 points in the season opener, then 18 on Sunday. He leads the team with an average of 22.0 ppg. Sophomore forward Christian Wood recorded his first career double-double with career highs of 12 points and 12 rebounds, also blocking four shots in the season opener and he leads the team in rebounding with 9.0 rpg. Freshman forward Goodluck Okonoboh blocked seven shots against Morehead State, then followed that up with six against SHSU, while senior guard Cody Doolin has dished out seven assists in each of UNLV's games this season with just three turnovers (assist-to-turnover ratio of 4.7). The Runnin' Rebels trailed by as many as 11 in the second half in both games and got a defensive stop at the end in both contests to secure the wins.
All championship-round games of the Coaches vs. Cancer Classic will be televised on truTV with Brian Anderson, Greg Anthony and Steve Smith calling the action, while Seth Davis will be the reporter. Jon Sandler and Robert Smith will handle the UNLV radio call, which may be heard live on ESPN Radio 1100 AM/100.9 FM in Las Vegas.
