LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) - The UNLV men's and women's swimming and diving teams won a total of nine events on Monday night to wrap up the three-day UNLV Winter Invitational at Buchanan Natatorium. The Rebels finished first in both team standings, with the women scoring 877.5 points and the men 1,177.5.
The night began with the 1650 free, and the lone Rebel in the event, Matt Roe, won in a time of 15:47.16. The next event was the 200 back, which saw two Rebels place in the top eight of the women's side. That included a first-place swim by Jessica Wong (2:00.00), while Kyndal Phillips placed fourth (2:03.30). Henrique Machado was the men's winner thanks to a swim of 1:46.25. Collin Baldacci was third (1:50.28) and Hannon Daigler fifth (1:53.45).
UNLV swept the next event as well, the 100 free. Julia Fehervari posted a winning time of 50.21, while Michelle Troup was third (51.41) and Elena Gavrilova fifth (51.64). The Rebel men took the top four spots, led by Tom Paco-Pedroni (43.27), Or Sabatier (44.19), Caio Dini (45.10) and Forrest Beesley (46.14). Dillon Virva placed seventh and Machado added an eighth place finish.
In the 200 breast, Lina Rathsack led the women's efforts with a runner-up time of 2:14.64 while Kristina Hendrick posted a seventh place swim (2:21.24). Boris Kulizhnikov was the men's winner, posting a 2:01.61. Also in the top eight was Francois Van Wynsberghe in fifth (2:10.04) and Hannon Daigler in eighth (2:14.21).
Gözde Tekin led the Rebel women in the 200 fly, placing third in 2:04.71, and that was followed by Kimberly Hendrick in fifth in 2:05.67. The Rebels posted a 1-2-3 sweep on the men's side. Avi Cohen was the winner, turning in a time of 1:48.59, while RIggert was second (1:50.77) and Collin Baldacci third (1:52.90). Joseph Starkweather added a fifth-place swim (1:54.83) as well.
The meet's final event was the 400 free relay. Julia Fehervari, Rathsack, Gavrilova and Troup won the women's race in 3:22.38, and the men's team of Paco-Pedroni, Sabatier, Dini and Virva turned in a winning time of 2:58.16.
The Rebels will next be in action on Tuesday, Jan. 6, with a dual meet at Bakersfield.
