Rebels Travel To No. 9 Cal State Fullerton; Host UND

FULLERTON, Calif. (UNLVRebels.com) - UNLV baseball (13-5, 7-2 Mountain West) will play two midweek games before resuming Mountain West play on Friday against San Diego State. The Rebels are most recently coming off of a series victory at San José State. UNLV dusted off its bats to win 18-2 on Friday night and won a pitching duel 2-1 on Saturday. The Spartans avoided the sweep by winning 3-2 on Sunday. The Rebels will stay on the road to play No. 9 Cal State Fullerton (10-7) on Tuesday at 6:00 p.m. PT and will host North Dakota (2-9) on Wednesday at 6:05 p.m. PT. Fans can watch the Rebels take on the Titans off of links at UNLVRebels.com. Cal State Fullerton is most recently coming off of a series win over Saint Mary's. They won the contest on Friday 6-5 in 13 innings, dropped the Saturday game 6-0 and bounced back to win the series 4-2 on Sunday. North Dakota won its first two games of the season at Utah Valley over the weekend. UND lost 8-5 on Friday, but won 10-1 and 10-4 on Saturday and Sunday, respectively.

SCOUTING THE REBELS
UNLV baseball (13-5, 7-2 Mountain West) will stay on the road for one midweek game against No. 9 Cal State Fullerton on Tuesday and then will return home to host North Dakota on Wednesday. Last week the Rebels went 3-1 with a midweek 4-3 victory over West Virginia and a series win at San José State. UNLV won its Friday contest 18-2 and out dueled the Spartans to win 2-1 on Saturday. The Spartans avoided the sweep by beating the Rebels 3-2 on Sunday. The Rebels' success this season has started with their starting pitchers. Friday starter Erick Fedde (3-1) now has 35 strikeouts, five of which came in a win over the Spartans, where he allowed one unearned run on seven hits in 7.0 innings of work. Junior John Richy (4-0) picked up his team-high fourth win of the year on Saturday as he allowed one unearned run on three hits and struck out six in his second career complete game. Sophomore Bryan Bonnell (2-1) did not factor into the decision in the Rebels' 3-2 loss on Sunday. Bonnell allowed two runs, one of which were earned, on six hits and recorded one strikeout in 7.0 innings of work. Torres (1-1) was saddled with the loss after allowing one run on two hits in an inning of work. Edgar Montes leads the Rebels from the plate and is hitting .333 with five doubles, which ranks second on the team, and 11 RBI. T.J. White is coming off a red-hot week where he was 8-for-16 with five RBI, four of which came on a grand slam he had on Friday. He is hitting .324 this year and leads the team with 16 RBI and five stolen bases.

SCOUTING THE TITANS
No. 9 Cal State Fullerton (10-7) comes into the midweek game against UNLV (13-5, 7-2 MW) on the heels of winning its series against Saint Mary's. The Titans opened the season as the consensus No. 1 team in the country, but started the season 2-3 with early losses to Washington State, USC and San Francisco. They rebounded to win six straight games over San Francisco (2), No. 9 Oregon (3) and one game against Baylor, but dropped the final two in the series. Last week Cal State Fullerton opened the week with a midweek loss at San Diego before taking two of three from Saint Mary's. The Titans are led by Tanner Pinkston, who is hitting .355 this year. J.D. Davis is hitting .328 and leads the team with three home runs and two triples. Matt Chapman has a team-high 13 RBI and is hitting .260 this season. Junior Koby Gauna (1-1, 2.28 ERA) will make his first start of the season against UNLV. Gauna has predominantly served as the Titans' closer this season and has recorded two saves. He has allowed six runs on 18 hits and has struck out 23 in 23.2 innings of work.

UNLV-CAL STATE FULLERTON HISTORY
UNLV hosted the Titans this fall and beat them in two exhibition contests. The Rebels are 1-11 in the last 12 meetings against Cal State Fullerton. The Titans lead the overall series 68-20 and the last time the two teams met in the regular season when Cal State Fullerton swept the Rebels in Fullerton, Calif. The Rebels last victory on the road against the Titans was a 7-5 win on Feb. 20, 1998.

SCOUTING NORTH DAKOTA
North Dakota (2-9) opened the year losing its first nine straight games, but UND has won two straight coming into its meeting with UNLV. North Dakota opened the season at Central Arkansas and lost two games to the Bears and two games to Illinois State. UND then traveled to Saint Louis and lost four games to the Billikens, where North Dakota was out scored 32-10. Most recently, UND opened Western Athletic Conference play by traveling to Utah Valley, where North Dakota won two-of-three against the Wolverines. UND lost the Friday contest in Orem, Utah 8-5, but bounced back to win 10-1 on Saturday and 10-4 on Sunday. North Dakota is led by Ryan Reese, who is hitting .371 this season and is tied for a team-high eight RBI. Zack Trygstad the only other player for UND that is hitting over .300 at .324 and is tied with Reese with eight RBI. North Dakota will send Brett DeGagne (0-0, 11.25 ERA) to the mound. DeGagne has only pitched 4.0 innings this season and has allowed five runs on six hits.

UNLV-NORTH DAKOTA HISTORY
This will be the first meeting between UNLV and North Dakota.

ON DECK
The Rebels resume Mountain West play by hosting San Diego State for three games beginning on Friday. UNLV played the Aztecs a total of eight times in 2013 and the Rebels went 5-3 against SDSU. UNLV will also host a midweek game against Utah Valley before heading back on the road when they travel for a three-game series at Nebraska and a rare Monday contest against Creighton at T.D. Ameritrade Park in Omaha, Neb.
