Rebels Ready For Mt. SAC Relays

April 17, 2014

LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) - The UNLV track & field team will participate in the 56th Annual Mt. SAC Relays in Walnut, Calif., Thursday and Friday at Hilmer Lodge Stadium. The Rebels will compete in a total of 10 events at the historic meet hosted at Mt. San Antonio College that began Wednesday and runs through Saturday.

The Scarlet & Gray will have one member, Laura Affeld, in action Thursday in the 3000m Steeplechase at 6:22 pm.

The remainder of the squad will take to the track Friday in eight events (100m, 200m, 400m, 800m, 100m hurdles, 400m hurdles, 4x100m relay and 4x400m relay) and one in the field (hammer). The 100m hurdles (Erin Morris, Joniece Ervin and Jordan Hardy) open up the day at 12:30 pm with the 4x400m relay winding things down at 4:50 pm.

"We love attending the Mt. SAC Relays," said head coach Yvonne Wade. "Historically, this has been one of the premiere meets on the West Coast. It allows our student-athletes to line up against some of the best competition across the country."

The Rebels are coming off a second-place finish at the Mondo Multi & Mid-Major Challenge last weekend in Sacramento, Calif. The team tallied 27 top-eight finishes, including victories in the 800m and both relays.

The 4x400m relay quartet of Kenia Bonilla, Monay Meggs, Alva Castillo and Auzsane Crowe-Carter ran a time of 3:39.43 - a time that sits atop the 2014 Mountain West standings.

Individually, three of the members of that relay rank either first or second in the conference in four different events. Meggs is first overall in both the 100m (24.14 - Cunningham Invitational) and 200m (54.31 - Aztec Invitational) while Crowe-Carter is tops in the 800m (2:06.03 - Mondo Challenge) with a time that also ranks fourth best in UNLV's outdoor performance list for the event. Castillo ranks second in the 400m after running a 55.54 at the Aztec Invitational.

Besides the trio from the 4x400m relay, another Rebel that sits high in the MW's standings is Ashley Franklin, who is second overall in the 100m (11.91 - Cunningham Invitational).

Two others that will participate at the Relays are Morris and Cortney Miller in the 100m hurdles and hammer throw, respectively. Both performed well last week at the Mondo Challenge with Morris finishing second in her event (14.07) while Miller was third in hers (183-7 (55.95m).
