RIVERSIDE, Calif. (UNLVRebels.com) - UNLV baseball (28-16/16-8 Mountain West), which is ranked No. 27 by Collegiate Baseball News, dropped its midweek contest 8-2 against UC Riverside (19-21) at the Riverside Sports Complex.
UCR's pitching kept the Rebels off balance in the game to even the season series. A six-run second inning propelled the Highlanders early and UC Riverside extended its lead by plating two runs in the home half of the fifth inning to power past UNLV on Tuesday.
The first run for the Rebels came in the eighth inning when Erik VanMeetren hit a double down the left field line, which scored T.J. White from third. Morgan Stotts followed that up with a double of his own down the left line, driving in VanMeetren.
Stotts finished 3-for-4 to lead UNLV from the plate. Joey Armstrong (2-for-4) was the only other Rebel to have multiple hits in the game.
UNLV starter Kenny Oakley (3-4) took the loss after allowing six runs, four of which were earned, on six hits in 4.0 innings of work. Matt Thomas, Cody Roper and Andrew Astone all made relief appearances fro the Rebels.
UNLV will play its first neutral site game of the year on Saturday as the Rebels travel to Clemson, S.C. and will face James Madison. UNLV will then play two games against Clemson on Sunday and Monday. The Sunday contest will be played in Greenville, S.C. at Fluor Field, which is the home to the Boston Red Sox's single A affiliate Greenville Drive.
