FRESNO, Calif. (UNLVRebels.com) - UNLV baseball (21-9/10-4 Mountain West), which is ranked No. 19 by Perfect Game and No. 25 by Baseball America, lost a pitching duel to Fresno State (17-14/7-7 MW) 2-0 at Beiden Field on Saturday night.
UNLV junior John Richy (5-2) struck out a career-high 11 in 8.0 innings of work, but was saddled with his second loss of the year. He allowed two runs on six hits and walked one batter in his second complete game performance of 2014.
Fresno State's Tim Borst (2-1) pitched his first career complete game. He allowed no runs on five hits and struck out four in the win.
The Bulldogs got on the board by scoring a run in the fourth and sixth innings. It was the first time this season that the Rebels were shut out and the first time since April 26, 2013, when UNLV was shut out 9-0 at New Mexico.
Edgar Montes was the only Rebel to have multiple hits in the game and finished 2-for-3 on the night. Patrick Armstrong, Morgan Stotts and Matt McCallister also recorded a hit in the game.
UNLV and Fresno State will play its rubber match on Sunday at 1:05 p.m. PT. The Rebels will send sophomore Bryan Bonnell (3-2, 1.88 ERA) to the mound and the Bulldogs are projected to send freshman Jimmy Lambert (1-3, 3.76 ERA).
