Rebels Finish Fourth At Cal-Nevada Championships

LA JOLLA, Calif. (UNLVRebels.com) - The UNLV track & field team finished fourth overall at the 21st Annual Cal-Nevada Championships with a total of 75 points off 11 top-eight finishes. The two-day meet was contested at UC San Diego's Triton Track & Field Stadium and won by Mountain West foe San Diego State and its 178 points. Long Beach State (123 points) and UC Irvine (84) took second and third, respectively.

The Scarlet & Gray was paced by a trio of student-athletes that placed in a pair of events each. Kenia Bonilla was the top point earner for the Rebels with 13 off a third-place finish in the 200m (24.64) and a fourth-place showing in the 100m (12.04 PB). Ashley Franklin finished behind Bonilla in both events with times of 12.07 in the 100m (fifth place) and 24.87 in the 200m (seventh). Noela Estrada ran the 400m and 400m hurdles to fourth- (56.76 PB) and sixth-place finishes (1:01.93), respectively.

The Rebels had three others - two individuals and one relay - place, as well. Joniece Ervin was seventh in the 400m hurdles (1:02.50 PB), Heather Hernandez-Shaw was second in the 1500m (4:41.40 PB) and the 4x400m relay squad comprised of Kylee Vandenberg, Laura Anuakpado, Ervin and Auzsane Crowe-Carter was fifth (3:49.75).

Off the track, Cortney Miller shined in the hammer with a second-place outing with a 175-7 (53.52m) while Amber Sanford was seventh in the triple jump with a measurement of 38-1.50 (11.62m). Sanford's performance came one day after she finished fifth in the long jump.

More than 20 different schools from both California and Nevada entered this weekend's meet, including: Sacramento State, UNLV (women only), Long Beach State, UC Riverside, Cal State L.A., Cal State Fullerton, Cal Poly Pomona, San Diego State (women only), Pomona-Pitzer, UC Santa Barbara, Cal Poly, Claremont-Mudd-Scripps, Cal State San Marcos, Whittier, Azusa Pacific, USC, Point Loma (women only), Pepperdine, Cal Lutheran, Loyola Marymount, Caltech, UC Irvine, Occidental, Soka, San Diego, Westmont, Cal State Stanislaus, La Verne (women only) and Concordia Irvine.
