LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) - UNLV right-handed pitcher Bryan Bonnell (4-2) was named the Mountain West Co-Pitcher of the Week, the conference office announced earlier today. He shares the weekly award with Fresno State's Tim Borst.
The native Las Vegan tossed his third complete game of the year and recorded the first shutout victory of his career as UNLV beat Fresno State 7-0 on Sunday, which also secured the series win over the Bulldogs. He allowed no runs on five hits and struck out four batters in the game.
Only one Fresno State player reached third base in the game and in the ninth inning Bonnell issued his third walk of the season, which was his first walk in 28.2 innings. His first walk was an intentional walk at New Mexico and his second walk came at San Jose State. This season Bonnell owns a 1.61 ERA, which is the second lowest on the team amongst starters, in a team-high 61.2 innings of work.
This is Bonnell's first conference honor and the second time this season a player from UNLV has been recognized. Erick Fedde was named Pitcher of the Week after his performance against Central Michigan in week one.
UNLV (22-9/11-4) will travel to face is Southeastern Conference member Arkansas. The Rebels and Razorbacks will play a two-game, midweek series on Tuesday and Wednesday before UNLV returns to Las Vegas. First pitch for Tuesday's game is 6:35 p.m. CT/4:35 p.m. PT. Sophomore Kenny Oakley (2-2, 1.37 ERA) will get the nod for the Rebels and left handed pitcher Colin Poche (2-0, 1.27) is expected to start for Arkansas. On Wednesday, sophomore Cody Roper (1-0, 7.88 ERA) will go for UNLV against the Razorbacks' Alex Phillips (2-0, 2.25 ERA) and first pitch is slated for 6:05 p.m. CT/4:05 p.m. PT.
