FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. (UNLVRebels.com) - No. 17/20 UNLV baseball (23-10/11-4 Mountain West) split its midweek series with No. 24 Arkansas (21-13) after the Razorbacks won 9-2 on Wednesday night at Baum Stadium.
The Rebels, who are ranked No. 17 by Perfect Game and No. 20 by Baseball America, were held at bay offensively by the Razorbacks, who are ranked No. 24 by Perfect Game. As a team, UNLV recorded two runs on four hits, but the team's first hit did not come until the fifth inning when Joey Swanner singled up the middle.
Arkansas scored seven unanswered runs in the first four innings and jumped out to a 7-0 lead. The Rebels then held the Razorbacks scoreless in the fifth and sixth innings.
T.J. White got the Rebels on the board in the seventh inning when he hit a one-out home run off of Arkansas's Jacob Stone. It was the fourth hit and first earned run that Stone has allowed this season. Two batters later Erik VanMeetren reached on a Razorback error and scored from first base when Swanner doubled to right-center field.
Cody Roper (1-1) took the loss after allowing seven runs on eight hits while striking out two and walking two in 4.0 innings of work. Andrew Encinas, Andrew Astone and Zach Story-Baker all made relief appearances for the Rebels.
Swanner finished 2-for-3 with an RBI and was the only player on the UNLV side with multiple hits. White and Edgar Montes were the only other Rebels to record a hit in the game.
UNLV, which wrapped up its nine-game road stretch with a 6-3 record, will now resume Mountain West by hosting San José State for a three-game series. The Rebels and Spartans will square off on Friday at 7:05 p.m. PT instead of 6:05 p.m. because of multiple events on campus.
