LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) - Arizona State (27-21) scored five runs in the first four innings en route to a 9-5 victory over UNLV baseball (30-20/17-9 MW) on Tuesday night at Earl E. Wilson Stadium.
The Sun Devils got things going in the second inning, scoring two run on an error that would have ended the inning. UNLV got a run back in the bottom half of the inning when Morgan Stotts drove in Patrick Armstrong with a single to left field.
After adding a run in the top half of the third, Arizona State tacked on two more in the fourth inning. Drew Stankiewicz doubled in a Tucker Esmay, and also advanced Johnny Sewald to third. Sewald scored on a sacrifice fly on R.J. Ybarra.
Arizona State plated two more runs in the sixth and seventh innings, pushing its lead to 9-1.
UNLV's offense came to life in the bottom half of the seventh. Pat Armstrong got things rolling with a single through the left side, and later scored on an Edgar Montes double. A.J. Hernandez came in as a pinch hitter, and drove in two runs with a double down the right field line. Hernandez capped off the scoring by coming home on a Joey Armstrong single.
Pat Armstrong had a strong showing from the plate to lead the Rebels. He went 3-for-4, with a triple and two singles, and scored two runs. Stotts also had multiple hits in the game and finished 2-for-4 with an RBI.
Cody Roper took the loss, falling to 1-2 on the season. He allowed three runs, one of which was earned, on three hits. He struck out three and walked three.
The Rebels return to conference play with a three-game set against in-state rival Nevada, Reno starting on Thursday at 6:05 p.m. PT. Entering the final series of the regular season, UNLV sits one game behind New Mexico in the Mountain West standings.
