LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) - UNLV has two doubles teams alive in the main draw along with a trio of entries continuing in the singles consolation draw after the first day of the 13th annual Freeman Memorial Women's Tennis Championships on Friday at the Fertitta Tennis Complex.

The Rebel duo of Paola Artiga and Mercedes Lopez downed Mason Strickland and Anna Mamalat of Texas A&M, 6-2, while Santa Shumilina and Iren Kotseva blanked Isabel Prado and Montana Morgan of Stanford, 6-0.

Sumilina also won her first round of singles, 6-1, 6-1 over Prado, before falling later in the day. Artiga won her first round of consolation, 6-2, 6-2 over Nora Tan of Stanford, while Kotseva downed Morgan 6-2, 6-0. Bojana Petrovic also advanced by default.

Individual competitors have come from teams that include four of the top 10 from the season's initial ITA rankings: No. 1 UCLA, No. 4 North Carolina, No. 8 Stanford and No. 10 Texas A&M. Also joining host UNLV are players from No. 14 USC and No. 34 Tennessee.

Action begins again Saturday with doubles at 10 a.m. PST. Admission to all matches is free. The event features one flight each of both singles and doubles along with consolation rounds.
