LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) - The UNLV men's and women's swimming and diving teams swept a dual meet over Air Force on Saturday afternoon in Buchanan Natatorium. The Rebel women won their third straight thanks to a score of 170-130, while UNLV men posted a 161-137 win over the Falcons.
A pair of double-event winners paced the UNLV women's team. Jessica Wong claimed the 100 back in 57.60 and added a win in the 200 back with a time of 2:03.71. Julia Fehervari meanwhile swept the sprint free events, placing first in both the 50 (23.83) and the 100 (51.60). Other winners on the day for UNLV included: Lina Rathsack in the 100 breast (1:05.06), Janelle Nguyen in the 200 fly (2:05.57), and Stephanie Samudro in the 100 fly (56.41).
UNLV swept both relays as well. Elena Gavrilova, Rathsack, Wong and Michelle Troup won the 200 medley relay in 1:43.59, while the 400 free relay team of Fehervari, Troup, Gavrilova and Rathsack posted a winning time of 3:26.73.
The men's meet had been close through the first 11 events, with UNLV leading the Falcons by two points. The Rebels then pulled away thanks to a 1-3 finish in the 500 free and a 1-2-3 sweep in the 100 fly for a 20-point edge with three events to go.
Henrique Machado led the Rebel men by sweeping the two back events. He first won the 100 back in 48.87, then added a winning time of 1:50.46 in the 200. Seven more Rebels would all win one event each: Matt Roe in the 1650 free (16:00.56), Tom Paco-Pedroni in the 200 free (1:40.59), Balint Batka in the 200 fly (1:48.74), Dillon Virva in the 50 free (20.50), Joe Riggert in the 500 free (4:35.33), Avi Cohen in the 100 fly (49.35) and Boris Kulizhnikov in the 400 IM (4:05.56). Machado, Kulizhnikov, Virva and Or Sabatier teamed up to win the first event, the 200 medley relay, with a time of 1:30.49.
The Rebels will be back in action on Saturday, Jan. 31 with a Senior Day meet against Wyoming and the women's squad from Northern Arizona. Action will start at 12 pm in Buchanan Natatorium. The UNLV divers will compete next weekend as well, at the Air Force Diving Invitational, Jan. 30-Feb. 1 in Colorado Springs, Colo.
