FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. (UNLVRebels.com) - One day after seeing four of its own pencil their names in the program's all-time indoor performances, UNLV track & field had two more do so Saturday at the Mountain T's Invitational. Newcomers Destiny Smith-Barnett and Taylor Pegram joined a select group with their outings in the 60m and 60m hurdles, respectively, at Northern Arizona's Walkup Skydome to move into fourth place in the Rebel charts.
In all, the Scarlet & Gray had 19 top-eight finishes on day two led by a foursome of first-place showings amongst collegiate competitors by Smith-Barnett in the 60m (7.39), Monay Meggs in the 400m (55.55), Pegram in the 60m hurdles (8.50) and Vannessa Martinez in the 3000m (11:18.58).
Smith-Barnett's and Meggs' times rank first overall for their discipline in the Mountain West. Meggs is immediately followed by teammates Laura Anuakpado and Mandy Chitwood in second and third. The former took second Saturday in the race in 56.10 PB, while the latter was fifth with a time of 56.86 PB.
"We are pleased with the performances at this meet," said head coach Yvonne Wade. "We continued with many personal bests and good opening marks, so we will continue to ride out the hard work the group has put in for this indoor season."
Five of UNLV's top-eight placements came in the 60m hurdles. After Pegram's victory, which ranks second in the MW, the Rebels' Ke'Nya Hardge (second/8.74), Joneice Ervin (third/8.83 PB), Jordan Hardy (fourth/8.96) and Juliet Summers-Hernandez (seventh/9.31) rounded out the quintet.
In the 60m, Smith-Barnett was accompanied by teammates Drea Austin (fourth/7.60) and Micayla Coquia (fifth/7.67), who ran a personal-best 7.65 in the preliminaries.
In the jumps, Ayana Gales was second in the triple jump (37-5.75/11.42m) and Madison Johonnot was fourth in the high jump (5-5/1.65m).
In the weight throw, UNLV student-athletes Cortney Miller took third with a measurement of 58-10 (17.94m), while MacKenna Howard finished eighth (53-1/16.20m). Vanessa Sierra, who was 10th, tossed a personal-best distance of 50-3 (15.33).
Madison Johonnot was fourth in the high jump behind a height of 5-5 (1.65m).
Vannessa Martinez, who ran in the 3000m, ran the mile in 5:39.52 (14th). Spencer Moore (fifth/5:19.35) and Nikki Regalado (seventh/5:26.10) as well as Auzsane Crowe-Carter (5:38.39) and Miranda Menzies (5:43.27) participated in the mile in Flagstaff's 7000-feet of elevation.
UNLV returns to action next week at the New Mexico Classic, which will be held at the Albuquerque Convention Center Feb. 6-7.
