UNLV took advantage of an early red card on Incarnate Word as the Rebels would score a season-high five goals in a 5-1 victory over the Cardinals on Sunday afternoon in WAC men's soccer action from Peter Johann Memorial Field. The Rebels improved to 9-3-1 with the victory, 3-1-1 in the conference while UIW fell to 6-6, 2-4 in league play.

"Today I think we were fortunate very early in the game to get an ejection from Incarnate Word and that was a huge advantage for us," said UNLV head coach Rich Ryerson. "It's always tough to play with 10, and they kept it close in the first half by limiting us to just one goal. We were able to take better advantage in the second half though with four more goals. I was very happy that our five goals came from five different players, and just as happy to get three points today in the conference standings. Overall a very good day for UNLV soccer."

Incarnate Word's Alfredo Zendejas was sent out of the game with a red card in the 10th minute for a hard foul from behind on the Rebels' Tony Murillo. That led the Cardinals shorthanded for the rest of the contest. UIW would play UNLV touch following the ejection and kept attacking the goal, getting off six shots while forcing Richard Garness to make five saves in the opening half. UNLV kept with its game plan though and broke through in the 29th minute for the game's first score. Murillo found Rodrigo Fuentes on the left side, and Fuentes drove into the box before chipping in a shot over the charging UIW goalkeeper. Danny Musovski also assisted on the score that put UNLV ahead 1-0.

In the second half the Rebels would post three goals in an 18-minute span. First, a handball in the box against the Cardinals led to a Musovski penalty kick goal in the 53rd minute. It was the Las Vegas sophomore's ninth goal of the year, and he has now scored a goal in six of the last seven games. It was also his sixth game-winner of the year, which is the second-best mark in the nation.

Andy Rodriguez posted the third goal of the game on a hard blast outside of the box off an assist from Irvin Somera in the 65th minute. The lead grew to 4-0 in the 71st minute when Corey Ackley dribbled into the box on the left side and slotted a shot cross cage to the right side for the score. Cody Massey and Blake Balelo were credited with assists on the score.

The shutout was lost for UNLV following a foul in the box, which awarded a penalty kick to the Cardinals. O'Neal Moore took the kick for UIW and scored down the middle to cut the edge to 4-1. UNLV closed off the scoring in the 86th minute, as Blake Balelo's corner kick to the top of the box led to Oscar Velazquez's blast to the back of the net for a 5-1 advantage.

UNLV finished the afternoon with a 20-9 edge on shots, including 14-7 on shots on goal. Garness finished the game with six saves and one goal allowed, while Abdel Rodriguez played the final 15 minutes in goal. For the Cardinals, Kieran O'Boyle posted five saves and allowed three scores. Chase Therrien was also in goal for UIW, and allowed two goals while posting four saves in 23 minutes of action.

The Rebels will end their home schedule next weekend as they host the two teams at the top of the WAC standings back-to-back. First up is a Friday, Oct. 23 contest against top-25 Seattle at 7 pm. That's followed by a Sunday Senior Day game against Utah Valley at 1 pm. There will be several promotions for the weekend, including a weekend $8 ticket package available, as well as $1 concessions and a free giveaway promotion.
