UNLV MEN'S SOCCER

UNLV's win streak looked to be in jeopardy with the game tied in the final minutes, but Danny Musovski once again came to the rescue, scoring his third game-winner in as many contests to give the Rebels a 2-1 victory over Houston Baptist in the WAC men's soccer opener for both teams Friday night at Peter Johann Field. The victory was the seventh straight for the Rebels, which is the longest streak since the 1987 season and is tied for third-longest in the nation as well. UNLV improved to 7-2 overall for the season, while the Huskies dropped to 4-5.

The Rebels struck early in the game, taking a 1-0 lead in the 12th minute on a blast by Rodrigo Fuentes from 15-yards out on the left side. Bradley Kamdem assisted on the score. UNLV came close several more times over the rest of the first half, with its scoring chances including a shot off the crossbar. The half ended with the Rebels taking 11 of the total 14 shots.

While UNLV dominated possession in the first half, the Huskies battled back and would tie the game up in the 52nd minute. The goal for the visitors came when the Huskies sent a pass ahead that a Rebel defender attempted to clear. However, George Kelley, running at full speed as he was trying to catch up to the pass, would stop the clearance attempt by heading the ball down. It came right at his feet, and he dribbled for another second before sending a hard shot to the back of the goal from 13 yards out.

As the second half went on, the Huskies were able to fight for more possession time. It did not result in more chances as the Rebels held them without another shot for the rest of the night. UNLV started to pick up its offense midway though the second half, taking 10 shots over the final 25 minutes. A second goal though would have to wait until the Rebels' final shot, and that came in the 86th minute. Musovski started the play when he brought the ball up past midfield before passing off to Kevin Partida. The junior midfielder sent a long pass to the right side to Oscar Velazquez, who quickly redirected the ball back into the box. Musovski would finish the play when he crashed into the box and headed the ball down, just barely getting past the goalline for the score.

UNLV finished the game with a commanding 24-5 edge on shots on goal. The Rebels also took 10 corner kicks on the night to three for Houston Baptist. In goal for UNLV, Richard Garness made three saves and one goal allowed, while Philip Poser posted three saves and two goals allowed for the Huskies.

The Rebels return to action on Sunday when they host UTRGV at 1 pm at Johann Field.
