UNLV saw its win streak come to an end on a windy Las Vegas afternoon, as UTRGV scored off a loose ball off a corner kick for the lone goal of the game in the Rebels' 1-0 on Sunday afternoon in WAC men's soccer action. The loss snapped UNLV's seven-game win streak, which had been the second-longest in the nation, and dropped its record to 7-3, 1-1 in league play. The Vaqueros improved to 4-5-1, and are 1-1 in the WAC as well.
"Hats off to UTRGV for tactically playing against us," said UNLV head coach Rich Ryerson. "They did a great job of doing what they needed to do, they got one corner kick and converted off it. We're going to have to address in our video sessions how they played against us so we'll be better prepared in the future if someone plays us like that."
It was a slow start to the game, with only four shots total in the opening half. Both of the Rebels' attempts in the half were stopped by Leo Castillo, who would post a total of five to earn the shutout. UNLV's efforts on offense were slowed down by the Vaqueros defensive-minded strategy. UTRGV was held to two shots itself in the first half, but would find a goal on the second one to take its 1-0 lead. The play happened following a corner kick from the right side that Rebel goalkeeper Richard Garness came out to challenge. Garness deflected the ball into the air, and it bounced off several players before Teemu Vaarakallio was able to knock it into the goal for the score from a few yards out.
In the second half the Rebels were able to get loose for more chances on goal, taking nine shots in the final 45 minutes. Three of those nine were on goal, but Castillo again stopped all three of them to keep the Rebels off the scoreboard.
UNLV held an overall 11-5 edge on shots, 5-2 on shots on goal and 5-3 on corner kicks. Garness finished with one save in goal for the Rebels.
UNLV will be back in action on Friday, Oct. 9, with a 3 pm league contest at San Jose State.
