Nov. 6, 2015 PROVO, Utah (UNLVRebels.com) - UNLV men's and women's swimming and diving were swept in a dual meet at BYU on Friday afternoon. The Rebel women lost a tight contest to BYU by a 155-145 score, while UNLV's men dropped a 176-116 decision to the Cougars.
In the women's meet, the Rebels opened with a win in the 200 medley relay, as the team of Elena Gavrilova, Lina Rathsack, Jessica Wong and Julia Fehervari posted a time of 1:44.31. The Cougars then won the next two event until Wong claimed the 100 back with a time of 57.52 for her first individual win of the night. The Rebs claimed the next event as well, with Rathsack posting a time of 1:04.14 in the 100 breast.
After BYU won the 200 fly, UNLV posted first place finishes in the next five events: the 50 free by Fehervari (23.58), the 3-meter board by Alyssa Arnett (289.10) and the 100 free, again by Fehervari (51.94). the 200 back by Wong (2:02.62) and the 200 breast by Rathsack (2:19.92).
The Cougars countered by placing first and third in the 500 free, and then took over the lead for good by claiming the top four spots in the 100 fly. That was followed by wins for the home team in the 1-meter diving and in the 200 IM, while UNLV closed out the meet with a first place swim of 1:34.87 in the 200 free relay. Making up that relay squad was Fehervari, Troup, Zeineb Khalfallah and Garrilova.
Dillon Virva was the first Rebel to win an event in the men's meet after posting a time of 20.46 in the 50 free. Also adding wins for UNLV was Boris Kulizhnikov in the 200 breast (2:05.04) and in the 200 IM (1:56.90), Lucas James also placed first on the 3-meter board (348.90). Kasey Foley, Forrest Beesley, Dylan Tarazona and Virva finished first in the 200 free relay in 1:22.31 to close out the night.
Other strong swims by the Rebels on the night included second-place finishes from Hannon Daigler in the 100 back, Chris Havton in the 200 fly, Kulizhnikov in the 100 breast, James on the 1-meter and Tarazona in the 100 fly.
UNLV will be back in action Saturday with a 10 am meet at Utah in Salt Lake City.
