Strip To Go Dark For Tark

Feb. 17, 2015

LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) - Legendary Hall of Fame Coach Jerry Tarkanian, who passed away Feb. 11, will become just the eighth person to have the lights of the world-famous Las Vegas Strip dimmed in his honor on Wednesday night.

Exterior lights around the city will go out for three minutes from 10:30-10:33 p.m. not long after the end of the UNLV vs. Boise State men's basketball game, which will be played just down he street in the arena Coach Tark made famous, the Thomas and Mack Center.

The idea for the uniquely Las Vegas honor took off when two UNLV alumni started a social media campaign on Twitter (#DimLights4Tark) and Facebook (Dim The Lights For Tark). Over the past week, the grass-roots effort earned local and then national media attention while gaining steam thanks to city, business and community leaders eager to help honor one of the most beloved icons in Las Vegas history.

More than 30 Strip properties as well as dozens of those located off the Strip and downtown are officially scheduled to participate. Even the mayor of Reno announced late Tuesday that his city's iconic arch would go dark to honor Tark.

The previous seven Strip observances were for President John F. Kennedy, Elvis, Sammy Davis Jr., Dean Martin, George Burns, Frank Sinatra and President Ronald Reagan. Also, beginning in 2009, the lights of the Strip have been dimmed annually in March for Earth Hour.

The following list, provided by the Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority (LVCVA), is of the resort properties and businesses scheduled to participate as of 7 p.m. PT on Tuesday, in alphabetical order.
