TEMPE, Ariz. (UNLVRebels.com) - UNLV baseball dropped its midweek game against No. 12 Arizona State, 5-4, on Wednesday at Phoenix Municipal Stadium.
Arizona State scored the first run in the home half of the first inning, but UNLV tied the game in the third inning when
Nick Rodriguez hit a sacrifice fly to right field, driving in
Edgar Montes.
The Rebels took the lead, scoring two runs in the fourth inning. Their first run came when
Dylan Ellis singled through the right side, driving in
Erik VanMeetren from second. Montes followed that up by beating out a double play ball, which would have ended the inning, and
Payton Squier scored.
The Sun Devils fought back and took a 5-3 lead after scoring four runs in the bottom of the fifth inning.
UNLV would add a run in the seventh when
Joey Armstrong singled up the middle, scoring pinch hitter
Austin Anderson from second.
Armstrong led the Rebels from the plate, going 2-for-4 with an RBI and a walk. He also recorded his first outfield assist of the season after gunning down an ASU baserunner at third base. Squier, Ellis, Montes, Anderson and
Justin Jones also collected a hit in the game.
Freshman
Blaze Bohall pitched effective in his second start of the season, allowing three runs on five hits in 4.1 innings of work. He struck out two and walked one.
Cody Roper (0-2) was saddled with the loss after allowing two runs on two hits in a third of an inning.

Dan Skelly and
Jack Freedman also made appearances out of the bullpen.
UNLV will stay on the road as it will resume Mountain West play at Air Force. The Rebels and Falcons are slated to play Friday through Sunday at 2:00 p.m. PT, 12:00 p.m. PT and 11:00 a.m. PT, respectively. UNLV's next home game will be on Tuesday as the Rebels host Grand Canyon on St. Patrick's Day.
