Rebel Offense Goes Cold Friday

March 13, 2015

Box Score: Connecticut 3, UNLV 2
Box Score: Weber State 7, UNLV 0

SANTEE, Calif. (UNLVRebels.com) - UNLV softball (14-12) saw its offense go cold during a pair of defeats Friday under the sultry sun at the San Diego Classic II held at Sportsplex USA. The Rebels lost their first contest, 3-2, to the Connecticut Huskies (7-9) before they were held scoreless, 7-0, against the Weber State Wildcats (14-9). The losses snapped the Scarlet & Gray's season-best, four-game winning streak that carried over from last weekend's Rebel Classic.

Against UConn, UNLV scored both of its runs in the first inning. Samantha Juarez and Francesca Foti got the offensive revving with consecutive one-out singles. Juarez advanced to third on Foti's hit before scoring when the duo pulled off a double steal. Alyssa Cordova, who was batting when the stolen bases occurred, put a ball in play that resulted in a throwing error by the Huskies' shortstop Lexi Gifford. Foti was granted home plate when the throw bounded into the first-base dugout.

The Huskies countered with two runs of their own in the bottom of the first off of three hits. They got the first score off a fielder's choice before they loaded up the bases only to get a walk to produce a 2-all stalemate.

The squad from Storrs, Conn., capped the scoring an inning later when they got a pair on via a double and a single. Gifford made up for her earlier fielding mistake with that double before scoring the would-be, game-winning run when the Huskies attempted a double steal.

Lauren Duggan (5-4) picked up the win in complete-game fashion for UConn. Duggan, who struck out two, allowed two runs (one earned) off of five hits.

Against WSU, UNLV was held hitless until the third when Fahren Glackin had a ground-rule double in the seven-run loss. In all, the Rebels had a total of three hits with the others coming off bunts by Juarez and Jamie DePippo.

The Wildcats on the other hand scattered nine hits that produced seven runs. Three of those base knocks came in the first after two outs had been recorded. Sara Hingsberger and Aubrey Whitmer started things with singles prior Molly Horne's bases loaded walk. Krystin Kubo capitalized on the bases-loaded opportunity with a two-run single to right.

WSU upped its lead to five with two runs in the second and another in the third. After being held scoreless for two frames, the team from Odgen, Utah pushed two more across in the sixth.

Bailey Seek (4-2) earned the win in four innings of relief for the Wildcats. Seek gave up two hits and struck four after she was summoned to the circle in relief of MaCauly Flint, who started and went three frames with one hit and five strikeouts.

UNLV's Janine Petmecky (0-2) was saddled with both losses. Petmecky combined to throw 5.0 innings and surrendered seven runs (four earned) off of seven hits. She walked three against two strikeouts.

Glackin saw action in the circle in both contests and threw a total of seven innings. She struck out five, but allowed three runs off of six hits.

UNLV returns to action Saturday at 11:30 am against New Mexico State at Sportsplex USA. The two previously played two weeks ago in Las Vegas with the Rebels on the wrong end of a 1-0 decision.
