COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (UNLVRebels.com) - UNLV baseball (7-9, 1-6 Mountain West) opened its series with Air Force (7-8, 4-3 MW) with a 12-1 loss on Friday at Falcon Field.
The Falcons took control of the game early, scoring three runs in the first three innings. Air Force added two more runs in the sixth before the Rebels scored their lone run of the game in the seventh inning.
Morgan Stotts led off the seventh with a single to right center and
Erik VanMeetren follow up with a single to right field, moving Stotts to third.
Payton Squier then grounded out to second, but Stotts scored on the play.
The Falcons answered by scoring three runs in the home half of the seventh and then exploded for four more runs in the bottom of the eighth.
UNLV was held to only five hits on the two, two of which came from VanMeetren who finished 2-for-3. Stotts,
Joey Armstrong and
A.J. VanMeetren also recorded a hit in the game.
D.J. Myers (2-2) took the loss after allowing six runs on 10 hits in 6.1 innings of work and he finished with five strikeouts.
Christian Myers and
Dan Skelly made relief appearances.
The Rebels and Falcons will play the second game of their three-game set on Saturday at 1:00 p.m. MT.
Kenny Oakley (1-1, 2.42 ERA) is slated to get the start for UNLV, while Steven Trojan (1-0, 1.89 ERA) is projected to go for Air Force.
