LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) - Freshman
Blaze Bohall (2-0) pitched well in his third career start and guided UNLV baseball (9-10) to a 7-1 victory over Grand Canyon (11-10) on Tuesday at Earl E. Wilson Stadium.
Bohall, a Glendale, Ariz. native, didn't record any strikeouts in the game, but was extremely effective, as he retired 17 of the last 18 batters he faced. He allowed one run on three hits and only three runners made it to third base in the game. He induced seven fly outs and 15 ground outs.
The Rebels plated a run in each of the first three innings and exploded for four runs in the seventh inning.
Joey Armstrong scored the first run of the game in the home half of the first inning after
Morgan Stotts hit a sacrifice fly to right field.
Grand Canyon tied the game in the top of the second inning, but UNLV recaptured the lead in the home half when
Austin Anderson scored on a fielder's choice. The Rebels extended their lead in the third when
Payton Squier scored on an
Edgar Montes sacrifice fly.
Dylan Ellis opened the seventh inning with a single to right field and scored two batters later when
Nick Rodriguez hit a triple to left center field. Rodriguez scored two pitches later when
Joey Armstrong singled up the middle.
The inning looked to be over as
Erik VanMeetren hit a fly ball to right field, but the home plate umpire ruled catcher's interference, allowing VanMeetren to reach. Stotts followed up by hitting a single to left field, driving in Squier from second. Montes then hit a single to right field, scoring VanMeetren from second.
Bohall came out in the top of the eighth and recorded the first out before giving way to
Brayden Torres, who pitched 1.2 innings of relief and recorded two strikeouts without giving up a hit.
Offensively the Rebels were led by Ellis, who finished 2-for-4 with a run scored. Stotts, Montes and Rodriguez all finished with two RBI in the game.
