Rebels Split Doubleheader With Wildcats

LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) - UNLV baseball (11-11) scored 23 runs in two games, but split a doubleheader with Northwestern (5-15) on Saturday at Earl E. Wilson Stadium.

The Rebels fell in the opener 13-12, but bounced back to beat the Wildcats 11-8 in the second game.

Senior Erik VanMeetren led UNLV from the plate, going 5-7 with an RBI in the two games. Freshman Austin Anderson was 3-9 and finished with a team-high seven RBI. Payton Squier and Morgan Stotts finished with four hits, while Dylan Ellis, Nick Rodrigeuz and Joey Armstrong each finished with three hits in the two games.

Corey Wilson (1-0) collected his first collegiate win after allowing four runs on nine hits in 5.1 innings of work while striking out four. Cody Roper pitched the final 2.2 innings of the day for UNLV and earned his first save of the year. Brayden Torres (0-1) was saddled with a loss in the first game after allowing three runs on four hits in 2.0 innings in the first game.

Northwestern jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first game of the day, but the Rebels owned a 5-3 lead after three complete innings. The Wildcats plated two runs in the fourth and UNLV responded by plating three runs of its own in the home half of the inning.

The teams traded runs in the sixth inning and Northwestern plated four runs in the seventh to take a 10-9 lead. The Rebels took a two run lead after plating three runs in the home half of the seventh, but the Wildcats captured the lead and held on for the win after scoring three runs in the top of the eighth inning.

The bats didn't cool off, even after a 45 minute break between the two games, as Northwestern posted a run in the first inning and UNLV answered by plating three runs in the home half of the first. The Wildcats recaptured the lead by plating three runs in the top of the second.

The third inning saw each team plate a run and the Rebels scored six runs over the next three innings (two in the fourth, three in the fifth and one in the sixth) to take a 10-5 lead. Northwestern plated three runs in the top of the eighth inning to make it a two run game, but UNLV plated an insurance run in the home half of the eighth. The first batter of the ninth inning for the Wildcats reached on an error, but Roper struck out two and induced a pop fly to second base to secure the win for the Rebels.

UNLV and Northwestern will wrap up its series on Sunday at 1:05 p.m. PT. Four-year old Hailey Dawson, who has Poland Syndrome and was born without a right pectoral muscle, which also affect the growth of her right hand, will throw out the first pitch of the game using a RoboHand that UNLV engineering students designed for her.

The deal expires three hours before the first pitch of every home game. Prices for individual games are $8 for adults, $6 for faculty/staff and seniors and $4 for groups of 15 or more (group tickets must be purchased at least one day in advance for the game). Children 12 and under and UNLV students with a valid student I.D. are free.

This season at Earl E. Wilson Stadium, fans will enjoy a new and improved concession stand. Smoken Sams catering will be providing entrees that range from barbecue sandwiches, hot dogs and hamburgers to nachos, chicken fingers and fries. A variety of beverages will also be available.
