LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) - UNLV baseball (12-11) completed its series victory over Northwester (5-16) with a 7-2 victory on Sunday at Earl E. Wilson Stadium.
Freshman
Blaze Bohall (3-0) earned his second win of the week after allowing two runs on eight hits in 7.0 innings of work. Bohall struck out five while walking one. Classmate
Dan Skelly earned the save after tossing 2.0 scoreless innings where he did not allow a hit, run or walk and struck out three.
From the plate, the Rebels were led by senior
Dylan Ellis. He finished the game 2-for-4 with a home run, two RBI and a run scored. Senior
Erik VanMeetren finished with two hits, going 2-for-2 with a home run, RBI and two walks. Freshman
Austin Anderson also finished with multiple hits, going 2-for-4.
The Rebels and Wildcats relied heavily on their pitching early in the game, as neither team was able to plate a run in the first three innings. Northwestern got on the board first with one run in the top of the fourth. UNLV answered and took a lead it would not relinquish in the home half of the fourth by plating two runs.
Ellis hit a one-out triple, driving in
Morgan Stotts from first. Later in the inning,
Joey Swanner hit a single to center field, which drove in
Edgar Montes from second.
VanMeetren's home run came in the bottom of the fifth to give UNLV a 3-1 lead.
The Wildcats came within one run after scoring in to the top of the seventh, but The Rebels extended their lead when
Payton Squier hit a triple, which drove in
Nick Rodriguez from second. Squier came around to score on a Stotts sacrifice fly.
UNLV added two more insurance runs in the eighth inning. The first was a leadoff home run by Ellis and the second came when Montes scored on a fielder's choice.
