LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) -- UNLV baseball (12-13, 2-9 Mountain West) plated three runs in the bottom of the eighth inning, but it was not enough as the Rebels fell 7-6 to San Diego State (21-6, 9-2 MW) on Saturday at Earl E. Wilson Stadium.
UNLV grabbed a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning when
Payton Squier scored on wild pitch.
The Aztec's plated their first runs of the game in the fourth inning and took a 2-1 lead over the Rebels and used a four-run fifth inning to extend its lead to 6-1.
UNLV chipped away at SDSU's lead by scoring one run in the fifth and sixth innings, but the Aztecs owned a four run lead after a run scored in the top of the eighth inning.
The Rebels rallied in the home half of the eighth inning, bringing home three runs.
Parker Hokuf led off the frame with a leadoff walk and
A.J. Hernandez hit his first career home run over the right field wall.
A.J. VanMeetren followed up with a double down the right field line and came around to score when the SDSU right fielder misplayed a
Joey Swanner single.
UNLV threated to tie the game in the bottom of the ninth, as it had the tying run at second, but a fly ball to right field ended the team's chances.
The Rebels outhit the Aztecs 11 to 9 and three players finished with multiple hits in the game.
Erik VanMeetren's consecutive on base streak of 18 ended in the first inning, but he finished the game 2-for-4 with a run scored and a walk. His brother
A.J. VanMeetren finished 2-for-4 with two runs scored and Hernandez finished 2-for-3 with three RBI and run scored.
UNLV and San Diego State will play the final game of its three-game series on Sunday at 1:05 p.m. PT. The Rebels are slated to send freshman
Blaze Bohall (3-0, 2.25 ERA) to the mound, while the Aztec's probable starting pitcher is Marcus Reyes (3-0, 2.97 ERA).
The Sunday contest between UNLV and SDSU can be heard on the Sports Radio 920 The Game. Dug Dugless and Josh Towers will have the call. The games will also be streamed online at UNLVRebels.com/videos

The deal expires three hours before the first pitch of every home game. Prices for individual games are $8 for adults, $6 for faculty/staff and seniors and $4 for groups of 15 or more (group tickets must be purchased at least one day in advance for the game). Children 12 and under and UNLV students with a valid student I.D. are free.
This season at Earl E. Wilson Stadium, fans will enjoy a new and improved concession stand. Smoken Sams catering will be providing entrees that range from barbecue sandwiches, hot dogs and hamburgers to nachos, chicken fingers and fries. A variety of beverages will also be available.
