COLUMBUS, Ohio(UNLVRebels.com) -- UNLV baseball (14-19) evened its series against Ohio State (23-8) on Saturday with a 3-2 win at Bill Davis Stadium. The Rebels and Buckeyes will play the rubber match of their three-game series on Sunday.
UNLV scored first when
Edgar Montes singled to left field, driving in
Joey Armstrong from second. The Rebels plated their second run in the game in the seventh inning when
Morgan Stotts doubled down the left field line, scoring pinch runner
Austin Anderson from second.
OSU tied the game when Aaron Gretz hit his first career home run in the home half of the seventh. After the home run, the Buckeyes loaded the bases and Pat Porter nearly gave OSU a four-run lead, but the Rebels'
Edgar Montes caught the ball for the third out in inning on the warning track in right field.
UNLV scored what would be the game-winning run in the eighth after
Joey Armstrong stole second and advanced to third on a OSU error and
Payton Squier hit a sacrifice fly to right field, bringing Armstrong home.
The Rebels then turned the game over to closer
Zack Hartman in the bottom of the eighth. He faced the minimum number of batters in 2.0 innings of work and preserved the win over the Buckeyes, earning his third save of the season in the process.
Joey Lauria (3-2) earned the win after tossing 0.2, where he struck out one and walked one.
UNLV's
D.J. Myers and OSU's Travis Lakins each started the game very strong as they did not allow a hit until the third inning and they faced the minimum number of batters through three innings. Myers allowed two runs on six hits and struck out six while walking one in 6.1 innings of work, while Lankins allowed two runs on six hits and struck out six while walking one in 7.0 innings. Despite their strong performances, neither starter factored in the decision.
Offensively the Rebels were led by
Joey Armstrong and
Morgan Stotts, as they both finished 2-for-4 in the game. Armstrong scored two runs and had a stolen base and Stotts finished with an RBI and recorded his team-high seventh double of the season.
The rubber match for the two teams that don Scarlet and Gray is scheduled for Sunday at 12:05 p.m. ET/9:05 a.m. PT. UNLV is slated to send
Blaze Bohall (3-2, 3.57 ERA) to the mound, while Ryan Riga (5-1, 1.40 ERA) is projected to start for the Buckeyes.
