LOS ANGELES, Calif. (UNLVRebels.com) -- Loyola Marymount (22-15) used a suicide squeeze in the bottom of the ninth inning to get past UNLV baseball (15-20) 8-7 on Tuesday night.
The Lions led off the bottom of the ninth with a double to left center and the winning run moved to third on a a sacrifice bunt. The Rebels then intentionally walked two batters to load the bases in order to force an out at any base. LMU's Ryan Erickson then laid down a bunt on a 1-0 count and Tanner Donnels took off from third to win the game for the Lions.
The Rebels struck first in the game, plating five runs in the third inning. Nick Rodriguez opened the inning with a single to right field, but became the first out in the inning on a fielder's choice by Joey Armstrong. After Payton Squier popped out to third base and Armstrong stole second, the Rebels drew back-to-back walks to load the bases. Edgar Montes then singled to left field, driving in Armstrong and Erik VanMeetren. Morgan Stotts followed that up with a double down the left field line, driving in Dylan Ellis. Austin Anderson then hit a single, brining home Montes and Stotts.
LMU got three runs back in the home half of the inning and tied the game in the fifth inning.
UNLV recaptured the lead in the sixth when Armstrong double to left field, driving in Nick Rodriguez from second. Two batters later, VanMeetren singled through the left side, plating Armstrong from third.
The Lions tied the game, again, in the home half of the inning by scoring two runs of their own.
The Rebels finished the game with 11 hits and went 6-for-18 with runners on, 5-for-11 with runners in scoring position and 8-for-17 with two outs. However, UNLV committed three costly errors in the game, which allowed three unearned runs to score.
Offensively, the Rebels were led by Montes, who finished 3-for-5 with a triple, two RBI and a run scored. Armstrong continued his recent tear by finishing 2-for-5 with two doubles, two runs scored, an RBI and a stolen base. Anderson also finished with multiple hits, going 2-for-4 in the game with two RBI.
Freshman Dan Skelly started the game for UNLV and allowed three runs on two hits in 2.1 innings. Joey Lauria made his 12th appearance of the year and allowed four runs, only one of which was earned, on seven hits while striking out a career-high seven in 3.2 innings of work.
