LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) -- Senior Edgar Montes laid down a bunt with the bases loaded to hand UNLV baseball (16-22, 3-15 Mountain West) a 3-2 walk-off victory over New Mexico (23-16, 13-8 Mountain West) in 10 innings on Sunday at Earl E. Wilson Stadium.
After a scoreless ninth and top half of the 10th, A.J. Hernandez reached first on a wild pitch and went to second on a Joey Swanner sacrifice bunt. Erik VanMeetren and Dylan Ellis both drew walks to load the bases, before Montes took the first pitch he saw and placed the bunt down the third-base side to score Hernandez on what was a suicide squeeze. It was the third bunt Montes has laid down this season.
New Mexico struck first after scoring runs in the second and fourth inning to take a 2-0 lead.
The Rebels cut the lead to one in the seventh inning when, with two outs, freshman Austin Anderson poked a 2-2 pitch into right field to bring home Morgan Stotts.
Erik VanMeetren tied the game in the eighth inning after belting his team-leading fifth home run over the left field wall.
Montes finished the day 1-for-4 with a walk. Stotts went 2-for-3 with a run scored, while VanMeetren went 1-for-4 with a home run and a walk.
Brayden Torres (1-2) earned the win for the Rebels after pitching 2.2 innings. He allowed one hit and struck out two. Sophomore D.J. Meyers posted another quality start, his sixth of the year, going 7.0 innings. He allowed two runs on six hits with four strikeouts. Joey Lauria also made a relief appearance for UNLV.
The Rebels return to the field Tuesday when they travel to UC Riverside. First pitch is scheduled for 3 p.m. UNLV returns home and will resume Mountain West play on Friday for a three-game set against Air Force.
