April 22, 2015 RANCHO MIRAGE, Calif. (UNLVRebels.com) -- The UNLV women's golf team turned in a final round score of 9-over-par 297 to finish fourth on Wednesday at the Mountain West Championship.
The Rebels finished the tournament 18-strokes off the lead at 30-over 894 (299-298-297), which was being played at the par-72, 6,291 yard, Dinah Shore Tournament at the Mission Hills Country Club.
UNLV senior Dana Finkelstein led the Rebels and finished third at even-par 216 (74-69-73). It was her fourth consecutive top-10 finish at the championship tournament and her third top-five finish.
Finkelstein was six shots off the lead, behind New Mexico's Manon Molle and San Diego State's Milagros Chaves, who tied at 6-under 210. Molle captured the individual championship after she recorded a birdie on the first hole of the playoff.
San Diego State took home the team title, turning in a score of 12-over 876 (288-301-287) for the tournament. It was the Aztecs first conference title in women's golf since joining the Mountain West in 2000. New Mexico turned in a final round score of 10-under 278, which was the lowest round of the tournament by a team, to finish second in the tournament at 17-over 881 (303-300-278). San Jose State finished third at 22-over 886 (293-296-297) and Nevada, Reno finished fifth at 33-over 897 (299-296-302).
Freshman Harley Dubsky (72-81-73) and sophomore Avery Frenche (75-77-74) finished tied for 16th at 10-over 226. Freshman Mackenzie Raim finished 23rd at 14-over 230 and Mayko Chwen Wang tied for 32nd at 19-over 235 (78-77-80).
UNLV locked up three key points in the Governor's Series, presented by NV Energy after finishing one spot higher in the standings than Nevada, Reno. The competition between the Rebels and Wolf Pack is in its third year and the two schools are tied at 18 points. Points for women's tennis were distributed to UNR today following UNLV's early exit. Men's tennis points have yet to be distributed as the two schools could potentially meet in the MW Championship, which begins tomorrow in Albuquerque, N.M. Men's Golf and Track are the only other sports with remaining points available and their respective championship tournaments are slated for May 1-3 and May 13-16.
