LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) - The UNLV softball team (22-26 overall, 8-9 Mountain West) was on the wrong end of a 10-0 decision against the San Jose State Spartans (33-15, 13-4) Saturday afternoon at Eller Media Stadium. The Spartans, who won in five innings, capitalized on all of their opportunities, while the Rebels left a total of six runners in scoring position between the first and third innings.
The visitors from the Bay Area took advantage of erratic pitching by the Rebels over the first two stanzas. Morgan Ettinger (8-9) walked the first two batters she faced in the first inning. Both of those free passes came back to haunt her as the duo and one more found their way to the plate off of three consecutive RBI singles.
Kwyn Cooper took over the pitching duties for the Rebels in the second. Cooper dished up back-to-back base on balls before three straight singles produced two more scores.
After a scoreless third, the Spartans put the game out of reach with four runs in the fourth and one more in the fifth.
The Rebel offense was able to get runners on the base paths, but was unable to finish. In the first, Garie Blando extended her career-best hitting streak to 18 games with a leadoff single that was followed by a one-base hit by Fahren Glackin. The pair moved into scoring position off a sacrifice bunt, but was left stranded when Allison Lang (13-8) recorded the second and third outs.
In the second, UNLV loaded the bags behind a double (Alyssa Cordova), a hit-by-pitch (Emilie Valadez) and a walk (Blando), before Lang forced a groundout to end the threat.
The Scarlet & Gray was able to get two more in scoring position in the third off a walk to Samantha Juarez and a one-out double by Merina Ili. Unfortunately, Lang struck out one and induced a ground ball to get out of the jam.
UNLV was only able to get one more runner on between the fourth and fifth - a single by Emily Haslinger - the rest of the affair.
Lang picked up her second win in as many games Saturday with a five-hit shutout of the Rebels. She struck out four against two walks.
Ettinger was tagged with the loss in only one inning of work. She allowed three runs off of three hits and two walks. Her successor, Cooper, gave up seven runs (six earned) off of eight hits in four innings. She struck out one, but walked three.
UNLV and SJSU close out their three-game conference series Sunday at Eller Media Stadium. First pitch is scheduled for 12:00 pm.
