LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) -- UNLV baseball (19-23, 6-15 Mountain West) completed its three-game sweep of Air Force (19-23, 10-14 Mountain West) with a 6-5 victory Sunday at Earl E. Wilson Stadium.
Payton Squier was perfect from the plate for the Rebels, going 4-for-4 with two runs scored. Edgar Montes and Erik VanMeetren both finished with multiple hits, going 2-for-3 and 2-for-2 respectively. The pair also finished with two RBI, as did senior Dylan Ellis, who went 1-for-4 in the game.
For the third consecutive day, Air Force struck first and held a 2-0 lead halfway through the third inning.
UNLV scored its first run in the third inning when Montes brought home Joey Armstrong on a single through the left side. Squier tied the game after he scored on a VanMeetren bunt single to the pitcher in the same frame.
The Rebels scored four more runs in the fifth to claim a lead they would not relinquish.
Armstrong got the inning started after reaching on an error, and later moved to third on a Squier single though the right side. Montes drove in Armstrong for the second time of the day with a double to left center.
Ellis plated two more runs with base-clearing double down the left field line, giving UNLV a 5-2 lead. VanMeetren continued the hit parade with a single up the middle, driving home Ellis and giving UNLV a four-run lead.
Air Force scratched together two more runs in the sixth and added another in the seventh. The Falcons threatened with the tying-run 90 feet away in the ninth, but Brayden Torres slammed the door and secured the sweep with a game-ending strikeout.
Blaze Bohall (5-2) earned his fifth win of the season after going 5.2 innings. He allowed four runs on five hits with five strikeouts. Torres picked up his third save of the season, pitching 1.1 innings with three strikeouts. Cody Roper and Joey Lauria also made relief appearances.
The Rebels return to the field Tuesday when they play host to UC Riverside. First pitch is scheduled for 3:05 p.m. It will be "Two Dollar Tuesday" at Earl E. Wilson Stadium and fans will enjoy $2 tickets (online only), $2 hot dogs, $2 soda and $2 off beer.
This season at Earl E. Wilson Stadium, fans will enjoy a new and improved concession stand. Smoken Sams catering will be providing entrees that range from barbecue sandwiches, hot dogs and hamburgers to nachos, chicken fingers and fries. A variety of beverages will also be available.
