April 3, 2015 LOS ANGELES (UNLVRebels.com) - The UNLV track & field team participated in three events at UCLA's Legends Invitational Friday and came away with a pair of second-place finishes in the 5000m and hammer throw. Spencer Moore ran a time of 17:24.57 in the former, while Cortney Miller (Las Vegas/Calvary Chapel Christian HS) threw a distance of 188-1 (57.34m) in the latter. In all, the Rebels had seven of their own place eighth or better on day one of the meet hosted at Drake Stadium.
Moore's time ranks as the fifth-best performance mark in program history. UNLV also got top-eight finishes from Rebecca Hobby and Amanda Berg, who finished fifth (17:50.53) and Amanda Berg (17:53.98), respectively. Sara Williams was seventh in 17:58.08. Vannessa Martinez (18:05.16) and Angela Ziff (18:43.20) were also in the race.
MacKenna Howard threw in both the discus (eighth: 135-5/41.28m) and hammer (12th: 153-5/46.77m). Vanessa Sierra also competed in the discus with a seventh-place showing behind a throw of 139-9 (42.59m).
The Rebels continue their participation at UCLA's meet Saturday with entries in 12 events - eight track and four field. The Scarlet & Gray will see Akia Armstrong, Juliet Summers-Hernandez and Krystal Wharton (Las Vegas/Valley HS) kick off the day in the long jump at 12:00 pm. The 4x400m relay will closedown the women's portion of the meet at 5:40 pm.
In addition to those competing in Los Angeles, UNLV's Mandy Chitwood (Las Vegas/Canyon Springs HS) and Auzsane Crowe-Carter have gone to run at the Stanford Invitational Saturday.
