LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) - The UNLV track & field team hits the road for another weekend in California with a stop at UC Irvine's adidas/Steve Scott Invitational. Anteater Stadium will play host to the two-day meet that begins Friday and concludes Saturday. UNLV will participate in five events on day one and 12 more on day two. In all, the Rebels are entered in 10 track disciplines and seven in the field.
The Scarlet & Gray gets started Friday with Cortney Miller (Las Vegas/Calvary Chapel Christian HS), Vanessa Sierra and Kyra Day (Las Vegas/Cheyenne HS) in the hammer throw at 2:00 pm. The long jump - Amari Norris (Las Vegas/Silverado HS), Kylee Vandenberg, Juliet Summers-Hernandez, Akia Armstrong and Krystal Wharton (Las Vegas/Valley HS) - and the javelin - Norris and Vandenberg - will follow at 4:00 and 4:30 pm, respectively.
The 3000m Steeplechase and the 5000m will be run later in the evening. Rebecca Hobby will compete in the former at 7:00 pm, while Sara Williams, Amanda Berg and Angela Ziff are entered in the latter, which begins 45 minutes later.
The Rebels entered the week with nine of their own ranked eighth or better amongst Mountain West competition. Miller and MacKenna Howard are second, respectively, in the hammer throw (195-6/59.58m) and shot put (51-6.5/15.71m). Krystal Wharton (19-6.75/5.96m) is third in the long jump, while Akia Armstrong (19-4.25/5.90m) is fourth. Kylee Vandenberg is fourth in the javelin (140-4/42.78m). Drea Austin (Las Vegas/Foothill HS) comes in sixth in both the 100m (11.80) and 200m (24.12). Joniece Ervin is seventh in the 400m hurdles (1:01.59), while Taylor Pegram is in that same spot in the 100m hurdles (13.73). Ke'Nya Hardge sits eighth in the 100m hurdles (13.91).
Seven of those nine will descend upon Anteater Stadium Saturday, while Miller and Vandenberg will have a go Friday.
Last week, UNLV tallied 18 top-eight finishes at Fresno State's Bulldog Invitational. Miller claimed the first place in the hammer amongst collegiate athletes, while four other individuals and the 4x100m relay took second.
