IRVINE, Calif. (UNLVRebels.com) - The UNLV track & field team registered eight top-eight finishes, including two wins, on the first day of UC Irvine's adidas/Steve Scott Invitational. Cortney Miller (Las Vegas/Calvary Chapel Christian HS) and Krystal Wharton (Las Vegas/Valley HS) claimed the top spot amongst collegiate competitors in the hammer throw (190-6/58.07m) and long jump (19-9.75/6.04m: tied personal best), respectively.
Wharton was one of four to place in the long jump with Akia Armstrong coming in fifth (18-3/5.56m), while Kylee Vandenberg was seventh (17-11.50/5.47m: PB) and Amari Norris was eighth (17-9.50/5.42m).
Not only did Vandenberg have a good performance in the long jump, but she also took second in the javelin (129-3/39.40m).
In the 5000m, Sara Williams took eighth 17:47.45 (PB) and Angela Ziff was 14th (18:09.24).
Two other Rebels competed in the hammer with Kyra Day taking 13th (152-5/46.47m: PB) and Vanessa Sierra coming in 14th (151-11/46.31m).
Saturday's action begins at noon with the women's discus. The track portion gets underway five minutes later with the 4x100m relay at 12:05 pm. In all, the Rebels will participate in 12 events on the second and final day at the Southern California meet.
Some notable Rebels to watch Saturday are MacKenna Howard in the shot put (2nd in the Mountain West: 51-6.5/15.71m), Drea Austin (Las Vegas/Foothill HS) in both the 100m (sixth: 11.80) and 200m (sixth: 24.12), Joniece Ervin in the 400m hurdles (seventh: 1:01.59), Taylor Pegram in the 100m hurdles (seventh: 13.73) and Ke'Nya Hardge in the 100m hurdles (eighth: 13.91). Miller and MacKenna Howard are second, respectively, in the hammer throw (195-6/59.58m) and shot put (51-6.5/15.71m). Krystal Wharton (19-6.75/5.96m) is third in the long jump, while Akia Armstrong (19-4.25/5.90m) is fourth. Kylee Vandenberg is fourth in the javelin (140-4/42.78m).
