Boyko, Shaq-Mu Taken In CFL Draft

May 12, 2015

LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) - Former UNLV offensive lineman Brett Boyko on Tuesday became the program's highest-ever pick in the Canadian Football League Draft when he went in the second round (14th overall) to the British Columbia Lions. His teammate, running back Shaquille Murray-Lawrence, joined him in being selected by that same BC franchise just one round later, 23rd overall.

The pair marked only the fourth and fifth Rebels to ever appear in the CFL Draft and the first since receiver Andrew Dubiellak in 2002. The previous high pick for the program was Damir Dupin, a defensive lineman who went in the third round in 1984 (22nd overall). Dupin is also the only UNLV CFL draft pick who was not originally from Canada.

Boyko, out of Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, was a four-year starter who was named Second Team All-Mountain West Conference in each of the last two seasons. After joining the Rebels in 2010, he converted to the offensive line and started every game of his career up front after having played quarterback and defensive line for St. Joseph's High School.

One of two Rebels to attend the NFL Combine in Indianapolis, he was invited to play in the 90th East-West Shrine Game on Jan. 17 but was not able to take part because of an arm injury suffered in the final game of his collegiate career against Nevada, Reno. Boyko was actually named the No. 1 eligible prospect for the CFL Draft in the league's official September rankings but fell into the second round on Tuesday because he is currently a member of the Philadelphia Eagles after signing an undrafted-free-agent contract with the NFL team earlier this month.

Murray-Lawrence led the Rebels as a senior with 552 rushing yards and nine touchdowns despite playing in only nine of the team's 13 games. The Toronto-area native turned in a trio of 100-yard efforts, including 143 yards on 20 carries at BYU on Nov. 15. He also caught 16 passes for 156 yards last fall.

After joining the Rebels in 2013 out of Tyler (Texas) Junior College, Murray-Lawrence, who has the longest name in UNLV football history with 23 characters, made an immediate impact, taking the shortest route to a 100-yard game in school history when he sprinted for 108 yards on just four carries at Minnesota. He finished his junior campaign with 418 yards and two scores on the ground.
