NOBLESVILLE, Ind. (UNLVRebels.com) - The No. 24 UNLV men's golf team shot a second-round 2-over-par 290 on Friday and remains in fifth place at the 2015 NCAA Noblesville Regional, which is being played at Sagamore Golf Club (par 72, 7,173 yards).
SMU took over the team lead after a second-round even-par 288 and has a 36-hole score of 3-under 573, leading second-place Colorado by four shots. Illinois is third at 3-over, followed by UCLA in fourth at 6-over and the Rebels in fifth at 9-over 585. UNLV is five shots ahead of sixth-place Oregon (14-over).
Individually, UCLA's Jonathan Garrick is at 7-under and holds a one shot lead over Colorado's David Oraee. Illinois' Brian Campbell is third at 3-under, while there is a three-way tie for fourth at 2-under.
The Rebels are led by senior Kurt Kityama, who is tied for 10th at 1-over 145 after a second-round 2-over 74. Senior Carl Jonson is tied for 17th at 2-over 146 after a round of 1-under 71 on Friday. Junior AJ McInerney is tied for 25th at 5-over after a second-round 75, senior Nicholas Maruri is tied for 38th at 7-over after a second-round 2-under 70 and freshman Shintaro Ban is tied for 49th at 9-over after a second-round 78. Mountain West Freshman of the Year John Oda was unable to compete because of a wrist injury and did not make the trip.
There are a total of six 54-hole regional tournaments. The Noblesville Regional consists of 14 teams and 75 individuals. The low five teams and the low individual not on those teams from each of the regionals will advance to the NCAA Championship finals, which will be played May 29-June 3 at The Concession Golf Club in Bradenton, Fla. (hosted by South Florida).
This year marks UNLV's 27th straight appearance in a NCAA Regional, which is the record for most consecutive appearances.
